糖心APP has added two new degree options for students interested in health care careers.

The associate of science (A.S.) degree in health sciences program is flexible and designed to help students prepare for many different types of health care jobs and move easily to a four-year college. It provides students with a foundation in the biological, physical and social sciences as they relate to human health. It is designed for those seeking entry into a medical profession or planning to transfer into bachelor鈥檚 degree programs in fields such as health sciences, public health or health administration. Students can customize classes to match their interests, earn credits for a university transfer and prepare for careers in nursing, therapy or health office work. Learn more at worwic.edu at the health sciences credit program page.

Another new option at Wor-Wic is a pathway for paramedics to an associate degree in nursing (ADN), which allows them to become registered nurses. The pathway previously only included licensed practical nurses (LPNs). Now, paramedics who completed a national accredited paramedic program with an active, unencumbered state paramedic license and National Registry Paramedic certification are eligible. Visit the nursing credit program page at worwic.edu for more information.

Registration for summer and fall credit classes at Wor-Wic opens on April 13, and prospective students may apply at any time via the website.

糖心APP will hold a free about its computer studies programs on Monday, April 6, at 7 p.m., via Zoom for anyone interested in learning more about degree, transfer and career opportunities in the computer field.

The information session will highlight two newly added that were designed to meet growing workforce and transfer demands in the technology sector: a computer science transfer associate of science (A.S.) degree and a cybersecurity associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degree.

The computer science transfer A.S. degree is designed for students planning to continue their education at a four-year institution. It was developed in conjunction with Salisbury University to allow students to enter with junior standing. The program provides a strong foundation in programming, problem-solving and computer science theory, preparing graduates for seamless transfer into bachelor鈥檚 degree programs in computer science and related fields.

The computer technology, cybersecurity concentration A.A.S. degree is a career-focused program that equips students with the technical skills needed to protect systems, networks and data in an increasingly digital world. Students will gain hands-on experience in areas such as network security, ethical hacking and risk management, preparing them for entry-level roles in cybersecurity and IT support.

The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program has announced that Deborah Casey, Ph.D., president of 糖心APP, is one of one of 23 community college presidents selected to participate in the third cohort of the Aspen Presidents Fellowship. The fellows will engage in a year-long professional development experience that will help them develop strategies to help more of their students graduate into good jobs, either directly after community college or following transfer and bachelor鈥檚 degree attainment.

鈥淚鈥檓 honored to participate in the Aspen Presidents Fellowship,鈥 Casey said. 鈥淥ver the next year, I鈥檒l work alongside 22 fellow presidents and leading experts to examine our institutions鈥 outcomes, identify opportunities for innovation and develop strategies that help more students earn a valued credential and advance in their careers, building economic resilience whether they pursue a job on the Eastern Shore or transfer to earn a bachelor鈥檚 degree. This fellowship is an incredible opportunity to strengthen the practices that drive post-completion success and upward mobility for Wor-Wic students and our communities.鈥

Through the program, fellows will work with highly accomplished community college presidents, Aspen leaders, and each other to analyze local labor markets, their colleges鈥 outcomes, national models of excellence, and lessons from highly successful presidents. The reform agendas they draft are then pressure-tested during multi-day residential sessions, multiple webinars, and feedback from peers and experts.

鈥淲e know from 15 years of intensive research how the best community colleges equip students with the skills and credentials that lead to good jobs and flourishing lives,鈥 said Josh Wyner, executive director of the College Excellence Program. 鈥淭hese 23 presidents have committed听 to strengthening their institutions so those outcomes become the norm for every student.鈥

This cohort of Aspen Presidents Fellows represents community college leaders serving students and communities across the country. The fellows lead institutions in 14 states, spanning rural communities, suburban regions, and urban centers. They represent colleges with a wide range of missions, from comprehensive and technical institutions to tribal-serving colleges. They join a growing network of 433 fellowship alumni, including 202 community college presidents, committed to strengthening student success and economic mobility in their communities. Aspen supports this network of community college reform leaders through targeted professional development, research briefings, and convenings at national conferences. The fellowship is supported by JPMorganChase.

Songer

Lauren Songer became a welder through the Wor-Wic EARN Grant Welding program.

In the summer of 2025, Lauren Songer applied for a free welding program funded by the EARN Maryland Grant Program. After a successful interview, she was thrilled to be chosen for the class.

Lauren attended the program from August through December. By the time she graduated, she had earned eight official welding certifications in several different styles, including:

  • SMAW (Stick welding)
  • FCAW (Flux-core welding)
  • GMAW (MIG welding)
  • GTAW (TIG welding)

Today, Lauren works as a welder at First State Fabrication and loves her career. She says her training at Wor-Wic prepared her for everything. She didn’t just learn how to weld, she also learned soft skills like professional behavior and hard skills like using a tape measure and solving technical problems.

The EARN grant was a huge help because it covered the costs of the 19-week program. This allowed Lauren to focus on her classes every weekday morning, which eventually helped her land her current job.

Why This Program Matters

This 372-hour course is so good that local experts call it the gold standard.听Steve McGee, the president of Chesapeake Shipbuilding, is a big fan of the graduates.

“Simply put, graduates of this program have the skills and work ethic we are looking for,” McGee said. “They do better work than others and are very valuable employees.”
